Situated on the border of the Mongolian Altaï, Khovd is better developed than its sister towns to the west, You're bound to go through it, if you're heading to the mountains by road. The town isn't that interesting but is great for stocking up on supplies before heading to the vast, solitary Altaï.
Before leaving, I managed to visit the 18th Century Manchu ruins. You'll find them to the north and on the outskirts of the town. Khovd's also home to the biggest Buddhist monastery in the western part of the country, which is a popular pilgrimage site that was officially re-opened in 2010.
During a trip to Mongolia, Khovd's a useful place to stop and prepare for the next stage of your journey. The stunning landscapes of Altaï will be waiting with open arms!
