Baeza is a big village half way between Quito and the Amazonian forest. It's also where the road splits in two: for Lago Agrio towards the north and Tena and Puerto Misahualli towards the south.

My suggestion:
You should only stop at Baeza if you have rented a car. If you are in a bus, you can go straight on to the Amazon.
My review

During my trip to Ecuador I was particularly struck by the countryside of Baeza. It was the first time I had seen this sort of thick jungle covering the mountains in greenery. It impressed me so much that even today, each time I see this sort of vegetation (which exists in various parts of the world), I say to myself "It's just like Baeza".

The town is at an altitude of 1,400 m. When you are coming down out of the Andes towards the Amazon plain Baeza seems to mark the shift between the two. The region is similar to Baños, further south, but less interesting.

A stop in Baeza can be nice if you stay in a charming small lodge before going off to the rigours of the mountains or the heat of the Amazonian forest.
