Located in the northwest of South America, Colombia is characterized by mountain ranges, coastal regions, and lush rainforests. Thanks to its diversity, there are hundreds of exciting activities to make an adventure trip in Colombia unforgettable.

What makes Colombia a great destination for adventure travel?

Bordering Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Panama, and Ecuador, Colombia is known as the "Gateway to South America." It’s also the only country on the continent with a coastline on the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, and it offers a unique natural landscape filled with a fascinating array of flora and fauna. Moreover, Colombia is home to about 10% of all living species in the world, meaning wildlife-viewing is an essential activity on any adventure trip in Colombia.

The best adventure activities in Colombia

There’s so much to see and do on an adventure vacation in Colombia, so we’ve narrowed it down to 5 of the best adventure activities in the country.

Experience scuba diving in Taganga

Taganga, located close to the Tayrona National Park, is one of the most accessible diving locations in Colombia and provides travelers with the opportunity to spot lobsters, sea turtles, tropical fish, and many other marine animals in crystal-clear waters.

Go paragliding across Bucaramanga and Chicamocha canyon

Bucaramanga is the top paragliding destination in Colombia, so adventure seekers should head here for spectacular sky-high thrills. The nearby Chicamocha Canyon is the highlight of paragliding around this region, as aerial views of the world’s second-largest canyon can’t be beat on this continent.

Enjoy white water rafting down Rio Suarez and Rio Fonce

Colombia has many rivers offering a range of rafting difficulties. If you’re experienced, head to Rio Suarez for white-water thrills. But if you’re a beginner, enjoy a slightly less hair-raising experience on the Rio Fonce. Opt for just a couple of hours, or make it a full-day trip.

Abseil down the Rio Claro Nature Reserve

Head to the Rio Claro Nature Reserve to try one of the most adventurous activities in Colombia: abseiling, be it down waterfalls, into caves, or into natural pools. If that’s not your thing, you can also try rafting or caving in the reserve too.

Mountain bike around Santa Helena

Less than an hour’s drive from Medellín, Santa Helena offers some of the best mountain biking trails in the country, with high-speed downhills and natural jumps. Avri Regional Park is also nearby, offering 28,000 acres of natural reserve to explore.

Tips for planning an adventure trip in Colombia

The best time for an adventure trip in Colombia is in the dry season, between December and March. If you’re keen to explore the rainforests, be sure to pack plenty of insect repellent.

Being close to the Equator, the climate of Colombia is rather uniform. The dry season lasts from December to March and should be preferred to avoid visiting Colombia in the rain. The wet season lasts from April to November, with very heavy rainfall. You should adapt your trip to these variations, as well as to the differences between the different regions: a tropical, and therefore very wet, climate in Amazonia, a harsher climate in the mountains and semi-desert in the Guajira. You should also avoid the weeks between mid-December and mid-January throughout country: they are very crowded with Colombian holidaymakers.
