The marvellous little-known North West Territories

The North West Territories are a region that is as marvellous as it is little known for those who love big virgin spaces and want to immerse themselves in wild, protected, nature.

Discovering the unknown

People travelling through Canadaseem to know very little about the North West Territories. They might know Yellowknife, the capital, but that's about all that seems to stick in their minds. However, it's full of interesting things to explore and beautiful countryside to admire!

Nature lovers will find there are no less than three national parks in the North West Territories (NWT), with those ice hills covered in earth which are found in the arctic, subarctic and antarctic regions, each one more extraordinary than the last: Aulavik and Tuktut Nogait. Between the three, they represent more than 32,000 sq km of nature in the wild. The first one I mentioned is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

One of the other pleasures of a stay in the NWT is being able to do winter sports in a beautiful setting: dog sledding, skating on frozen lakes, cross-country skiing and admiring the aurora borealis!

The people of the Great North

One of my most precious souvenirs of the NWT's little-known wonders is a meeting with the Inuit people. If you take Dempster Highway as far as Inuvik during the Winter you can drive on frozen rivers and go as far as the edge of the Arctic Ocean, in a place where time seems to stand still.

In these very remote places you will meet unique people and have extraordinarily intense encounters which will stay with you for the rest of your life: perhaps sharing a meal of whale meat, a local festival or just a walk in the pingos, the earth covered ice hills which are typical of the arctic regions.

The only downside that I have to admit is that, unlike other trips to Canada, the NWT are a destination that requires a certain financial comfort and fairly big budget to be able to enjoy it to the full!
