Quebrada de Humahuaca is a deep canyon in the province of Jujuy, in the north west of Argentina. Quebrada's fantastically coloured landscapes are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wonderful.

My suggestion:
Rent a car in Salta and go off for 3 or 4 days adventure in Quebrada. That way you will be free to come and go as you want, especially as the distances between each stopping place are long.
My review

Quebrada de Humahuaca is absolutely beautiful. We travelled through countryside that was completely stunning. Deserts, cactus as far as the eye can see, colourful hills...a stream of breathtaking landscapes. To my mind the weirdest was the very tidily shaped hills coloured like rainbows - absolutely unbelievable. They are also called the Hornocal Mountains. They are a must-see during a trpi to Argentina. The colours are so bright that you almost wonder whether someone has been out with a paintbrush!

I recommend you take good walking shoes. Quebrada de Humahuaca is worth dawdling over, taking your time. It's nature's realm and you will feel very small.

Something that must be done if you love wide open spaces, desert landscapes and canyons. It gave me a foretaste of the bizarre scenery that we would find in Bolivia, which is very nearby.

In the north-west of Argentina, in the province of Jujuy, Quebrada de Humahuaca is a mountainous region that every traveller would enjoy visiting during a trip to Argentina.

My suggestion:
A visit to Quebrada de Humahuaca can be done as a day excursion rather than an extended stay. However, I recommend you go to the region, especially to Tilcara, to enjoy the scenery.
My review

I really enjoyed crossing Quebrada de Humahuacha because of the beautiful mountain scenery and especially the famous Hill of Seven Colours. From ochre to pink, via red - I counted, there were definitely 7!

This region is a sort of big valley several kilometres wide which you can walk over. Tilcara is a village in the middle of the Quebrada de Humahuaca. It seems to me the best place to visit the area from because it is close to the HIll of Seven Colours.

Although I wouldn't say the area is an essential part of a trip to Argentina I spent an enjoyable 3 days visiting it in a car I hired in Salta. If you decide to do the same thing then you should also go a little further north as far as the picturesque village of Iruya.
