Along with Patagonia, the Andean northwest was a favourite during my trip to Argentina. All around Salta, a few hundred kilometres from Chile and Bolivia, the mountain ranges are a blend of greens, violets and ochres.
The must-sees in Quebrada de Humahuaca, which links Jujuy to La Quiaca on the Bolivian border, are Purmamarca and the Cierro de los Siete Colores, Tilcara and its cacti forest, Maimara with its Paleta del Pintor (painter's palette) and Humahuaca.
Two things struck me at Maimara - the shape of the mountain reminded me of waves and the buildings were mud-brick. Touring the area is easy whilst accomodation is cheap and cheerful. The landscape is so incredible, you'll wonder if it's been Photoshopped! A must-see!
