Kargil is a stop-over town midway between Srinagar in Kashmir and Leh in Ladakh. It's an obligatory stop-off point for a bite to eat or to spend the night, but above all, the surrounding landscapes are fabulous.

My suggestion:
Rather than sleeping in Kargil like the majority of tourists and locals doing the Srinagar-Leh journey in the North of India, I drove for a few more hours until I reached the superb village of Lamayuru, in the middle of the chain of Zanskar.
My review

After Drass, the so-called 2nd coldest place in the world, the Kashmir mountains are freezing cold and appear in intriguing colours whilst the jeeps follow the river.

Suddenly, Kargil appears as a green oasis in the cold desert. The route is separated in two at that point to join up with Khalsi, but foreigners can only take the southern part.

Kargil is the traditional stop-off point for lorry drivers and travellers during a trip to India. Although it isn't very charming, it is the only important town on the Srinagar-Leh route and offers all the amenities, which enables you to split the journey in two. It would be suicidal to ask a driver to do the trip in one go.
