A few days taking it completely easy surrounded by palm trees and mangroves.

My suggestion:
The operative word here is "relax!" Admire the local plants and wildlife and don't worry about a thing.

~After kilometers and kilometers of tarmac or railway, it's time get off dry land and take advantage of the backwaters of Kerala for a few days of relaxation, ideally as a romantic break for two. Onceonboard the boat, all that remains to do is let yourself be overtaken by the flow of the water and observe the expanses of coconut palms that line the banks as your meal is served.

I selected the day's activities – boating along the canals and massages in the huts – in very limited numbers for an excellent reason: the backwaters are the ideal place in which to relax and laze around, read in the sun, or enjoy an aperitif at dusk, when birds in their thousands flock to spend the night in the surrounding trees.

My tip: ask your local guide to get you away from the crowds: you've come to the backwaters to relax; it would be a shame to have to put up with neighbors who have different ideas. Furthermore, the groups of houseboats are especially impressive viewed from afar, which is a good reason to put some distance between them and yourself.

A tropical wetland area of canals, lagoons, and lakes in the Kerala region of southern India.

My suggestion:
Rent a houseboat and spend a day and night wandering the canals.
My review

The backwaters are a network of numerous green, natural canals and definitely the most visited tourist site in southern India.

The landscapes are totally amazing and nature rules the roost. During one of my trips to India, I remember seeing lots of birds, monkeys, and tropical flowers and plants when I stayed on a houseboat. Houseboats are the best way to get around the canals and you need to spend at least one night and one day on the water to fully appreciate it.

The canals are used as a highway by the locals to move both people and goods around. In the backwaters area, the whole of everyday life takes place on the water. It's absolutely fascinating and unique in the whole country! Make sure you take the time to see this particular show.
