Laugarvatn is quite a popular village on the road that leads to the Golden Circle. I have been there several times during my travels in Iceland but have never spent much time there. It is known in particular for its swimming pool/spa complex with a view on the lake.
It is true that it is a pleasant place to spend the night, in particular thanks to the superb view of the lake with the surrounding mountains in the distance. A quiet destination, far from the hustle and bustle of Reykjavik and which allows you to approach Thingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss.
There are some beautiful walks from Laugarvatn, but just in case the Golden Circle is not enough for you, there is also horseback riding and a visit to the caves.
