Both a national park and a glacier, Vatnajokull possesses marvels by the dozen.

My suggestion:
The region is wild, it stretches into the hinterland and those who want to discover it must put aside time for the hike. You have to be able to get about independently inside the national park.
My review

The Vatnajokull is the most extensive glacier in Europe and an immense natural park that encompasses several old natural parks since 2011.

To say that I travelled the length and breadth of it would be a lie, so vast is Vatnakokull National Park , but I visited several sites, including Asbyrgi canyon, and the hikes around Skaftafell and Lonsoraefi are amongst my best memories.

Its rhyolite mountains, its geothermal zones and its off the beaten track sites make it a must see for those who are ready to go on an independent hike . Do not hesitate to ask the refuge keepers for advice or to get in touch with the national hiking federation.

Lastly, the Bárðarbunga volcano, which was in the news in 2014, is also in the national park.
