A fjord in the north of the country, away from Route No.1 that has excellent mountain and coastal walks.

My suggestion:
Take the time to tour the picturesque villages and enjoy the scenic local walks.
My review

Skagafjördur is an impressive fjord, close to the northern capital of Akureyri. The main road circles the Saki Peninsula, which is a less frequented part of the country, being out of the way and some distance from Route No.1, the highway that runs around the entire island. Some find its location inconvenient, but I preferred the fact that it's quiet and home to some fantastic scenery.

There are several, typically Icelandic villages on Skagafjördur such as Saudarkrokur or Skagaströnd. This is superb hiking country and I highly recommend the walk opposite Drangey Island.

i also loved Hofsos, which is near to a pretty 18th Century peat-built chapel and has one of the best swimming pools in the country - perfect if you need to unwind! The chapel's tiny, so you'll need to keep your eyes peeled!
