This itinerary has been crafted by our Local Agency with one idea in mind: to inspire you. Every element can be adapted to your needs and your interests, from duration to accommodation and activities.
Arrive in Mexico City, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world. With its culinary scene exploding and a vibrant cultural scene gaining more and more international esteem, Mexico City is a great tourist destination. You will be transferred to your hotel where you can relax or exploring the neighbourhood.
Enjoy a guided tour of this incredible city. Begin in the Zocalo square, the beating heart of Mexico’s capital. Visit the Palacio Nacional, the Templo Mayor and the ancient Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan. Have lunch by the Xochimilco Lake and listen to some mariachi music. In the afternoon, you will visit the National Museum of Anthropology, one of the best museums in the country! Rest after a long day in your hotel.
This morning, stop in the city of Toluca on your way out of Mexico City. Enjoy the views of the alpine forests which hide lakes and rivers, ancient ruins and volcanoes. In the afternoon, Discover the pink colonial city of Morelia. Take some time to explore the treasures and secrets of this charming city such as the Palacio de Gobierno and the Museo del Dulce (Candy museum).
This morning, hop on a boat for a visit to Janitzio island which means 'where it rains'. On the way, encounter the fishermen with their unique butterfly nets fishing in the lake. Once on the island, stroll up to the top and visit the statue of Morelos, a true architectural masterpiece, that tells the story of the Mexican revolution. In the afternoon, travel to the peaceful town of Patzcuaro, one of Mexico's Pueblos Magicos and admire its adobe houses built over the quiet streets while listening to Michoacana folk music.
Today, walk through the pinewoods of the butterfly reserve to observe this very rare, natural phenomenon. Every year, between November and the end of March, about 100 million, perhaps even a billion, Mariposas Monarcas (Monarch Butterflies) escape the Canadian cold, and fly south to spend the winter in the mountains of the center of Mexico. Stroll through small areas of the forest reserve, where the butterflies gather, colouring the trees orange and literally bending their branches under their collective weight. Spend the night in nearby Valle de Bravo.
Valle de Bravo is located on the Lake Avándaro, southwest of the city of Toluca. This small village with cobbled streets is characterized by its white walled houses, its wonderful surrounding forests and its lake where you can enjoy many water-related activities (sailing, jet skiing, water skiing). You may also rent a boat, go horseback riding or, if you’re feeling more adventurous, go paragliding. Spend the evening at leisure before departing in the morning.
It's time to say goodbye to central Mexico as your visit to this part of our beautiful country has come to an end. We hope you loved visiting the Monarch Butterflies and seeing what else this region has to offer. This is surely one of Mexico’s best kept secrets.. Depart from your hotel with more than enough time to travel back to Mexico City and check-in at the airport. Have a safe flight home!
