Situated on the road linking Flores with the Belizean border, I found that this less-frequented archaeological site had a wonderfully mysterious atmosphere, thanks to its calm and beautifully lush surroundings. It comprises of several buildings including big temples, superb pyramids and several carved stelae. This is one place I'd love to introduce to my friends and family! With binoculars in hand, I spent hours watching the howler monkeys that live in this part of the Maya Biosphere Reserve.
Even if I'm sometimes a bit dismissive of the Mayan sites that you'll see during a trip to Guatemala, I found that Yaxhá was worth its weight in gold. Situated at the end of little path, which looks like a cul-de-sac, the Maler pyramid complex and the walk down to the Yaxhá Lagoon are well worth the detour.
