Situated on the Georgian and Azerbaijan border, the David Garedja Monastery is a sprawling and enchanting complex, set in magnificent surroundings.

My suggestion:
Fifteen monastic buildings make up the complex, including the fascinating Udabno and Lavra churches, which are still inhabited today.
My review

Situated in the the wine producing region of Kakheti, the David Garedja Monastery is surrounded by a landscape that differs from the rest of the area. The region is known for being lush and lined with vineyards, yet the monastery sits in a dry, desertic setting, dominated by mountains that only enhance the beauty of this must-see during a trip to Georgia.

The complex itself is impressive, with numerous churches spread far and wide over hundreds of metres. Some buildings are carved out of the rock, which only confirms the importance of the site. On a different note, the location of the David Garedja Monastery is a contentious issue, as it sits on both Georgian and Azerbaijan soil, leading to diplomatic tension between the two countries.
