Hike Tanzania's best short trails

ActiveTanzania

Thanks to its varied landscape of savannas, lakes, and mountains, Tanzania has a wealth of great hiking trails.

Arusha National Park is one one of the best spots for novice hikers. This nature reserve at the foot of Mount Meru's 2.8 mile-high peak protects forests and lakes, with paths you can usually complete in just a few hours. Ascending Mount Meru itself should only be considered if you're prepared for a high-altitude three-day hike. The Ngorongoro conservation area also offers some beautiful hikes through lush volcanic landscapes, ranging from easy walking routes to moderate trails.

On the Zanzibar archipelago's main island, head to Jozani Forest. Walks here are great for families, starting with 45-minute journeys through its eucalyptus, ficus, and palm trees. You can spot the island's native monkey species, the red colobus, along the way.
