Campo de Piedra Pómez (Argentina)

We felt as if we'd travelled to another planet when we first saw the immense volanic rocks at Campo de Piedra Pómez. The porous rocks before our eyes, ranging in colour from ochre to white, were deposited here thousands of years ago and seem to spread into the distance as far as the eyes can see.

Our guide explained to us that they were formed as a result of liquid lava heated to more than 500°C being shot up into the air. It's such a surreal image that I had trouble imagining it.

I recommend rising early if you want to avoid the tourist rush and take advantage of the peace and calm this protected natural area has to offer. It's impossible to properly describe my impressions of this place as the scenery at Campo de Piedra Pómez is unlike anything else I encountered during my trip to Argentina.
