In the heart of Catamarca province, about an hour's drive from Antofagasta de la Sierra,is El Peñón, one of the least polluted places on the planet.

My suggestion:
If you want to avoid altitude sickness, don't forget to take regular pauses, drink a lot of water and chew coca leaves, like the region's inhabitants.
My review

"An adobe hamlet in the middle of nowhere with the immense Andes mountains in the background", a perfect description of the picturesque village of El Peñón,  at an altitude of 3,400 m. To get there, take Route 43 for about 60 km from the town of Antofagasta de la Sierra.

Apart from its typically North West Argentina houses, El Peñón is nice for those looking for a bit of rest and calm during a tour of Argentina. In the village everyone knows everyone else, because there are only about 300 inhabitants, but twice as many vicunas.... I did say it was a hamlet!

Near this peaceful spot are several interesting sites, such as Galan Volcano, the surreal Campo de Piedra Pómez and Laguna Grande. People don't often talk about these places but they are worth a visit. So why not take a trip to planet Catamarca?
