An ancient Greek town, founded in the 3rd Century BC, Aphrodisias is named after its temple and 'Patron Saint', the goddess Aphrodite. Today you'll find an impressive archeological site with well conserved remains. The Temple of Aphrodite, the monumental Gateway, the Odeum and, best of all, the Stadium are some of the best preserved ruins in Europe.
Personally, I found the site fascinating and am pleased I made the detour. Apart from being well preserved, it wasn't choc-a-block with tourists, unlike Ephesus, for example.
So, if you find yourself in this part of Turkey, I highly recommend you put Aphrodisias on your list.
