A quiet shopping city, Bergama is mainly famous as the location of the incredible ancient site of Pergamon, which is perhaps the most impressive in the whole of Turkey.
The best views over Bergama are to be had from the top of Pergamon's amphitheater, whose structure follows the steep slope of the hill and seems to plunge down towards the city below.
A small rural city located in inland Turkey, Bergama would not be a particularly notable place if it didn't contain the magnificent site of Pergamon, which sits up in the mountains overlooking the city. In my opinion, Pergamon, with its incredibly well preserved ruins and relative absence of visitors, is one of Turkey's must-see sites
. I would also not miss the opportunity to visit the city of Bergama down below it. It's a place I was pleasantly surprised by, with its astonishingly relaxed atmosphere, its charming little city center, and its bustling market.
