You don't visit Canakkale in the same way as you would Cappadoce or Bodrum. The regiontells of a bloody past and inspires a feeling of restrant. Having gone there during the winter months, the deserted feel of the place was only amplified. Located on the straits of the Dardanelles, the memorial to the martyrs pays homage to the thousands who died in the Battle of Gallipoli. The year 2015 marked the centenary of this terrible battle and many commemorations were planned.
In the same area, make sure you explore the remains of Troy, which I haven't actually visited myself.
If you don't have any personal reasons to visit Canakkale, such as a particular interest in Turkish history or a family connection, I don't recommend these sites as must-sees. It's better to save them for a second trip to Turkey, or a long stay in the country.
