A student town located on the banks of the Dardanelles Strait, Çanakkale is the ideal base from which to explore the ancient site of Troy.

My suggestion:
After visiting Troy, you could also go to the neighboring site of Abydos, which is less famous but no less interesting.
My review
Located on the Asian banks of the Dardanelles Strait, its strategic position at the gateway to Asia means it has been of military importance since time immemorial. To begin with, there's the legendary city of Troy, the site of which is just a stone's throw from the modern city of Çanakkale, which was written about superbly by Homer in the Iliad. Be warned though: I was quite disappointed by this site, finding it to be fairly devoid of interesting ruins.

Known for its bloody battles, Canakkale tells of some of the most turbulent parts of Turkish history.

My suggestion:
It's worth hiring a car because the memorials and museums are quite distant from each other.
My review

You don't visit Canakkale in the same way as you would Cappadoce or Bodrum. The regiontells of a bloody past and inspires a feeling of restrant. Having gone there during the winter months, the deserted feel of the place was only amplified. Military graves and memorials constitute the main points of interest and, in all these places, the emotion is almost tangible. However the city itself has a pretty port

Located on the straits of the Dardanelles, the memorial to the martyrs pays homage to the thousands who died in the Battle of Gallipoli. The year 2015 marked the centenary of this terrible battle and many commemorations were planned.

In the same area, make sure you explore the remains of Troy, which I haven't actually visited myself.

If you don't have any personal reasons to visit Canakkale, such as a particular interest in Turkish history or a family connection, I don't recommend these sites as must-sees. It's better to save them for a second trip to Turkey, or a long stay in the country.
