Morocco

How can you get around in Morocco?

To get around Morocco you have a whole host of choices!

By air

The Moroccan airline Royal Air Maroc offers a good network of internal flights linking the main cities of Morocco: Tangier, Marrakesh, Essaouira, Agadir, Fez, Casablanca, Dakhla... etc.

For some flights you'll have to transfer at Casablanca Airport. This method of transport, the most expensive way to get around during a trip to Morocco, is interesting if you have a little bit of time there and you want to explore the country from North to South.

By rail

Morocco has an excellent rail network which is one of the best in the whole of Africa. The two main lines are those from Tangier to Marrakesh (passing through Rabat and Casablanca amongst others) and from Oujda to Nador, which passes through Fez and Meknes. It's the ideal way to travel through the country during a stay in Morocco: economical, quick and comfortable.

The link between Casablanca and Rabat is particularly busy because trains leave every 30 minutes and take less than an hour to go between the two main cities in Morocco. There are also night trains between Tangier and Marrakesh.

By road

Several coaches go up and down through Morocco, with many big coach companies such as the most well known one, CTM. You will also find plenty of local transport, a lot cheaper and typically Moroccan.

Renting a car

There's also the option of renting a car to be completely autonomous and free to go wherever you want. However, renting a car in Morocco is quite expensive and to be honest it's not a country where it's really pleasant to drive, at least not in the cities.

Having said that there are very good tarmac roads almost everywhere in the country which allow you to reach isolated regions. In the south of the country, particularly in the desert or even in the Atlas Mountains, roads are in bad or even very bad condition, and some are often only tracks. Sometimes it's best to have an off-road vehicle in some areas.
