Day 2: Ubud, Soft Rice Paddies Trek – Dinner with Locals

Today is a relaxing day as you will be walking through the quaint surroundings of Ubud, the trail will lead you through idyllic rice paddies, small villages and lush green fields. Which walking your guide will explain the process it takes to cultivate, plant, harvest and process the rice so that it’s ready for public consumption. You will want to bring your camera as this trek will offer many incredible photo opportunities. After a day of immaculate views and news, it’s back to the hotel in the afternoon.

One can learn a lot about the culture when visiting a Balinese family compound.  This
Balinese dinner can be combined with a visit to a small shrine carved in the rocks dating back to the 11th century.

Before dinner, you will get a guided tour through the family compound by your host. You will learn that there are more than one family living within the compound. When a son of the family marries, his wife usually moves into this compound, so a compound is a place for extended families, each with their own sleeping quarters, but otherwise sharing the facilities. The compound is surrounded by a wall. Different buildings within the compound are laid out according to Balinese architecture where directions are defined by the location of the Gunung Agung, Holy Mountain. The family shrine is the most sacred area of the compound, and the host will explain what kind of offerings are placed at which shrine. You will be served dinner while sitting on the floor, and you can choose to eat with your hands just like the Balinese.

Family members drop in to enjoy the food but will find their place to eat anywhere in the compound. So do not expect to be seated on a table with the family around, as this is not the Balinese style. Food is freshly cooked in the family kitchen, where together with rice the menu is soup, vegetables, soybean, corn fritter and a chicken dish. Selamat Makan.
