Lying to the north of Zagreb, Zagorje is a region famous for its wines and natural hot springs, and it is the perfect place to come for those looking to get a real breath of fresh air and experience the Croatian countryside without venturing too far from the capital.

My suggestion:
It is possible to visit Zagorje just for the day from Zagreb by renting a car, or you can stay over in the area for a few days to fully savour the charms of the Croatian countryside.
My review

Zagorje is a wine-growing and agricultural region located amid rolling countryside in the north of the country. I really loved the tiny villages and green, verdant landscapes in this area, which lies not far outside Zagreb. There are also lots of places you can visit here that specialise in wine-tasting.

In my opinion, a trip to Zagorje is not complete without visiting Krapina and its Neanderthal Museum, the castle of Trakošćan or that of Veliki Tabor, and in particular the beautiful Baroque city of Varaždin just to the east of the region.

If you mainly want to spend time enjoying Zagorje's rural landscapes and countryside, however, I recommend staying at one of the charming little places in the countryside here, where they serve breakfasts made using locally-grown produce!
