Renovated in a romantic style at the beginning of the 19th century, Trsat castle at Rijeka, still has the outwardly austere and simple appearance of its original 13th construction, which can deceive visitors. But its situation, on top of a promontory and the view it has over Kvarner Bay, give it a very special place among the architectural riches of Croatia.

Lying around 19 miles from Split, Trogir is without a doubt Croatia's most charming port, and has miraculously managed to escape the effects of mass tourism.

Pula has some wonderful architectural heritage to offer, with its exceptionally well-preserved amphitheatre a notable example of this. Visiting the city and immersing yourself in this historical past is a very enjoyable experience.

I really developed a soft spot for the small village of Motovun during my visit to Istria. Proudly built on a hill, you'll need to leave your car at the entrance to the village and travel the last metres on foot. Completely paved, Motovun resembles Provençal villages. Flowers in planters, well maintained small gardens, smart souvenir shops and truffles everywhere. The first time I tried a truffle, I found the taste very strong but I quickly got used to it and discovered a passion for local dishes based on truffles. But, Motovun is a victim of its success and the accommodation prices are relatively high especially for the area. Some advice, choose another town as a base and just spend the day wandering through the old village. The view of the surroundings from the top of the hill is amazing, and you can walk along the ramparts. A pleasant stop during your stay in Croatia.

History lovers will never forget seeing the roman ruins on the Island of Vis, an incredibly picturesque place where you can almost imagine the life that the roman people would have lived here, surrounded by sea, sand and nature. Finally, the blue grotto is another unmissable location to see as a family. Catch a boat to take you to this stunning ocean paradise, where you can explore and enjoy several nearby restaurants and bars before heading back to the mainland to explore some more.<h4>What to do as a family</h4>Croatia is a natural choice for active families, so if sitting on a beach all day is not your idea of a great trip, the Croatia is the place for you. If boating, diving or watersports are what you’re looking for on your family vacation, then there no better place than the Paklinski Islands, a chain of 16 islands with clear blue waters, a great place for snorkeling or sea kayaking before relaxing in the evenings. If you are tied to school vacation periods, then the peak months are still and excellent time to visit, however, you will need to be prepared to book in advance to avoid any disappointment or raised prices. If you are coming to hike or cycle then the cooler months of March and April are perfect, with spring weather meaning that the scenery is idyllic.
