Like the island of Vis, Lastovo was formerly off limits to foreign visitors due to its use as an off-shore military base up until 1989. You can still feel the effects of this today as Lestovo remains a very secret, little-known island well off the beaten track. Lastovo is a paradise for tourists, walkers and divers, and I spent an incredible week here enjoying a sense of peace, tranquility and isolation that I did not experience on any other Croatian island.
The town of Lastovo itself is without a doubt the place to stay here, surrounded by a labyrinth of steep little medieval streets that seem to cling to the hillside, creating the impression that the town sits extending along the slopes like a vineyard. Lastovo is a little-known destination that should definitely be on the itinerary of anyone visiting Croatia.
