Ston is a small village that would have little of interest to offer were it not for its defensive stone walls. Only a three-and-a-half-mile long section still remains today, and tourists can visit this. It is the longest fortification of its kind still standing in Europe and the second longest in the world.
I travelled via the Pelješac Peninsula after visiting Korčula and stopped off at Ston along the way for the chance to walk the famous walls. The climb up at the beginning itself is not easy, and reaching the walls is hard going. However, I did find out that they hold a marathon each year here and the participants actually run along the same route! Fitness enthusiasts take note! There are some wonderful views to be had from the top of the walls, and the walk around them constitutes an enjoyable way to spend a few hours.
