Thailand

What formalities are required to enter Thailand?

The formalities required to organize a trip to Thailand are so changeable that you must always check for the most up-to-date information by contacting the Thai embassy in your country.

Before departure

At the time of writing, only a passport is required for stays of less than thirty days This passport must be valid for a minimum period of six months after your planned return from Thailand. If you intend to stay for longer, it is vital that you apply for a visa before departure at the Thai embassy in your country. It costs €30 and you have three months to use your visa To obtain a visa, you must also provide two identity photos as well as a photocopy of your return airline ticket. This advice applies to citizens of France, Belgium, Switzerland and Canada.

No vaccines are mandatory if you want to visit Thailand. You therefore don't need to carry an international vaccination certificate. On the other hand, it is vital to get vaccinated against typhoid and hepatitis A, and it is recommended that you also have vaccinations against yellow fever, rabies and Japanese encephalitis.

Also apply for an international driving licence if you intend to drive while in the country.

Upon arrival in the country

In the country

If you enter Thailand by air, you will automatically have the right to remain in the country for thirty days. Note however that this period is only 15 days if you cross over a land border to enter Thailand. If, once you have arrived in the country, you decide to extend your stay, you need to visit one of the immigration offices in Bangkok or another major city. They can extend your right to remain for a further thirty days. Another solution is to leave the country before re-entering. This involves crossing over a land border, giving you a further fifteen days' right to remain on Thai soil. Note however that if you stay beyond the limit of your right to remain, the fine when you leave the country amounts to around €12.50 for each additional day spent illegally on Thai soil.

Regardless, you must check all information before traveling by contacting the Thai embassy.
