A humid area in the southeast of the country; it marks the border between South Africa and Mozambique. It is wild, hard to access and stops at Saint Lucia. It notably includes Kosi Bay and Sodwana Bay.

My suggestion:
If you'd like to make the most of the landscape, rent a 4x4 and leave the main road beyond Saint Lucia. This is in fact obligatory if you want to cross the border and go as far as Ponta de Oro in Mozambique.
My review

A very beautiful, marshy region which extends across 900,000 km2. It is somewhere between a tropical and sub-tropical zone. I really liked the Saint Lucia area for walks along the river, which allow you tosee many crocodiles and hippos. Kosi Bay is also nice for walking around the lakes and, last but not least, Sowana Bay for its beach and dive sites. If you get past the slightly touristy areas, you feel as though you've reached the edge of the world!

Maputaland is a humid and very wild region where we saw many birds, but it is difficult to get to. We crossed into Mozambique passing through here (you can buy the visa at this border). We drove along kilometres of untamed beaches.

Don't forget to take antimalarial medication with you. In this region there are a very large number of mosquitos! If you'd like to get off the beaten track, this visit is ideal.

Maputaland is a very marshy area.
