Wilderness is nice little seaside resort which doesn't receive too many visitors and has a wild nature reserve (hence the name) close by, ideal for doing walks. It's the nicest village after Mossel Bay and George and frankly it's best to stop here rather than in any of the big cities beforehand when coming from Cape Town.
I appreciated the village feel of the central street with its few restaurants, but it's a shame that the main national highway cuts the place in two. However, there wasn't really any other choice as the mountain prevents the road from going around it. On the other side the village is built around a pretty lagoon.
The villas by the sea are really beautiful, luxurious, with an amazing view out over the horizon. The atmosphere is calm and relaxed, and the main beach is supervised. However the other beaches are dangerous due to very strong currents. There's a farm high up which offers alternative accommodation and a beautiful view over the bay and its surroundings.
