Mountain Zebra National Park is a lot different from the usual reserves for it is located in a mountainous continental zone. So, you do not see the Big 5 here, but many peaceful mammals: the famous mountain zebra, of course, but also the eland, the black wildebeest, the greater kudu, the red hartebeest, the grey rhebok, the antelope, the steenbok, the springbok and the black eagle. More rare are the black rhinoceros, the cape buffalo and the caracal with pointed ears.
It is visited by four-wheel drive going along pretty scenic roads: Sonnenrust Trail (9 ml) to the north of the park, Juriesdam Trail (6 ml) on the eastern side of the park and Umngeni Trail (5 ml) on the north-western side.
I drove about freely with no guide for the 28 miles of the trail. It is open from October to April and in winter it snows here.
