The "pretty village" is well named. Villahermosa is the main town of Tabasco province. It is very famous for the Olmec remains that have been discovered there and which are very interesting to see during a trip to Mexico.
My suggestion:
Personally, I loved exploring the town on foot. I really enjoyed my visit to the historic and commercial center, Zona Luz. It's a pedestrian zone, lined with boutiques and restaurants and makes a very pleasant walk.
My review
La Venta is a swamp to the north of this town in Mexico. At first the site was explored by petroleum companies and then they discovered archaeological remains. Finally, the site was transformed into an open air museum, exhibiting the artifacts of the Olmec civilization. It's the perfect place to spend the afternoon. But beware, La Venta is a swamp, which means that there are mosquitos! So it's imperative that you wear mosquito repellent and long, loose clothes during your visit.

Relax enjoying an ice cream in the evening in the city centre's large park.
My review
Villahermosa is quite a nice city. It lies along the Usumacinta River. Surrounded by thick, lush jungle, and with its relaxed, friendly atmosphere, its pretty squares and its animated nightlife, I found it a charming place. There are often live concerts to attend in the evenings, in the streets or at the pavilions in the city's parks.
