An island that is off the coast from Patzcuaro, in the state of Michoacan, where the Tarascan culture lingers.

My suggestion:
Its famous for being one of the best places to celebrate "el dia de los muertos". But unless you really enjoy being a part of crowds of bad mannered tourist,s who like staring at other people, I recommend you avoid going on that day.
My review
Michoacan has a bad reputation among the Mexicans: corruption, drugs, cartels...not a very enticing picture, and so it's a destination that is not well known to travellers. Which is a pity because the region, between the sea and the mountains, has a lot to offer. Among other places that the visitor can choose from in the area, there is the Island of Janitzio.
