- Encounters with locals
Keflavik is the name of the International Airport and you'll go through it when you arrive in Iceland, but it’s also the name of a town which is a little less known to tourists.
I travelled through Keflavik the first time I visited Iceland a few years ago, and I haven’t been back yet. My memory is of a small town with well-aligned houses, the Icelandair Hotel in the centre, and several restaurants including a kebab house which seemed to be a hit with the Icelandic youth who frequented it.
For me, it’s the perfect city to spend your first night after arriving or your last night before departing on an international flight. It's close to the airport and you’ll be able to catch a few hours of sleep, or maybe more. Alternatively, it can serve as a base for exploring the Reykjanes Peninsula which is so often overlooked by tourists who are eager to escape as well as discover some stunning natural sites and some beautiful steep cliffs by the sea.
