The northern capital is charming and has the benefit of being a 'large' town in the heart of fjord country.

My suggestion:
If you enjoy city life, put aside a couple of days in order to explore its museums, its centre, the botanical garden and the cathedral.
My review

It only has 18,000 inhabitants and yet Akureyri is the second largest town in Iceland. After having toured several Icelandic villages, I was pleased to return to civilisation, so to speak. Situated between mountain and sea, Akureyri is on the shores of the Eyafjordur Fjord and even boasts a ski resort!

As I passed under the bridge that crosses the fjord, I was blown away by the view of the town. The road leading to the town centre is lined with old buildings, some of which have their construction date inscribed on their walls.

Take a stroll along the cobbled street near to the huge, imposing cultural centre and head up to the cathedral and botanical garden...

As for eating out, I recommend Strikid for it's menu and terrace; coffee-wise the Blaa Kannan Cafe, situated in the blue building on the main street, is a must. Finally, if you're a culture vulture the Eymundsson Library is one for those of you who love browsing books and are looking for a free Wi-Fi connection.
