If you're a food lover, be sure to do a car tour of the Buzet region of northern Istria, which lies not far from the Slovenian border.  The area's rolling, verdant landscapes are simply magnificent, and it is considered one of Croatia's main gastronomic regions.

Zagorje is a wine-growing and agricultural region located amid rolling countryside in the north of the country. I really loved the tiny villages and green, verdant landscapes in this area, which lies not far outside Zagreb. There are also lots of places you can visit here that specialise in wine-tasting. In my opinion, a trip to Zagorje is not complete without visiting Krapina and its Neanderthal Museum, the castle of Trakošćan or that of Veliki Tabor, and in particular the beautiful Baroque city of Varaždin just to the east of the region.  If you mainly want to spend time enjoying Zagorje's rural landscapes and countryside, however, I recommend staying at one of the charming little places in the countryside here, where they serve breakfasts made using locally-grown produce!
