Martillo Island is one of the Argentinian islands on the Tierra del Fuego archipelago in the Beagle Channel. What makes it distinctive? The population of Magellanic penguins who come to breed and lay their eggs on the island between March and October.
You have two options to get to this little piece of land. By land from Ushuaia, expect a two hour drive, or by sea from the port of Ushuaia, expect a good hour and a half crossing.
Once we arrive on Martillo Island, our guide takes us towards the beach so we can observe the little tuxedo birds up close. Access is regulated by the Argentinian animal protection organisation, and only 80 people split into 4 groups can walk around the island's cove at a time. The birds tan in the sun on the grey beach. Much to our surprise, we notice a few king penguins. With its golden neck and slender appearance, it easily stands out from its fellow birds.
