Cerro Negro is a hamlet with about 30 inhabitants, situated in Tinogasta department, which is in the isolated province of Catamarca. Its inhabitants live from farming and raising animals.
It's not essential to stop at Cerro Negro, you can continue on towards El Alto, another picturesque hamlet about 20 km further on. If you are going to visit the area then you can look forward to panoramas of green valleys and pine forests. All this greenery is in direct contrast to the white, grey and beige scenery in the rest of the region, and especially at its most famous site, Campo de Piedra Pomez.
Unlike its neighbours, Salta, Jujuy and Tucuman, Catamarca is not a touristy region, although it has several sites that are worth a visit. Which ones? The colonial buildings of San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca; Laguna Blanca Biosphere Reserve and the Salar del Hombre Muerto (a salt desert) which is bordered by the Galan volcano.
