I went through Molinos after I left Cafayate and Quebrada de las Flechas. In one short day I had gone from a lively village surrounded by vineyards to an arid, rocky, moon like landscape. When I arrived at Molinos I was surprised again, this time by its old fashioned atmosphere. The baroque church of San Pedro Nolasco de los Molinos, which was built in 1692, is a real jewel of colonial architecture. The interior is covered with fabric and statues made by artisans from the area, which I loved. Another interesting place to visit in Molinos is the vicuna reserve. These animals are typical of the region. A visit which will please both old and young if you are travelling in a family group .

I don't have a great memory of Los Molinos, quite the contrary. Although the region around it is quite simply amazing and has lots of things to see. My favourite place in the Salta area being Cachi without a doubt. Having read what a famous guide book had to say, I went to Los Molinos to see its architecture, which supposedly rivals that of Cusco in Peru. A more than tempting description... And exaggerated to say the least. The church is definitely pretty, but not really worth the 50 km detour on a rough track, making the journey long and dangerous. The worst part for me was getting away from the place. There a few tourists and so few buses to get back to Cafayate. there were a few private taxis, but they were much too expensive. So I decided to hitch and by chance, after a few hours, I found the only kind soul who was going my way and willing to take me, in spite of local insurance restrictions on picking up hitch-hikers...Phew! In a nutshell, I generally try to avoid slagging off places that I've visited, but all I can say is that this trip was a total nightmare. Whichever way you look at it, Los Molinos is a very long way from being on the list of must-see places on a <a href="/argentina/">trip to Argentina.</a>
