The Song Chay mountains are ideal if you like trekking and walking off the beaten path.

My suggestion:
I think it's essential to use a local agent if you want to spend several days in the Song Chay mountains.
My review

We arranged our trip to the Song Chay mountains with an agency so we could meet lots of the local minorities and see the daily life of the families who welcomed us so warmly. We left from Tan Sa Phin and saw several remote villages. We crossed the region of Ki Liou Ti mountain and headed to Phin Ho where the forests and tea plantations were everywhere.

There were some magical hours walking, surrounded by mountains, terraces of rice paddies and green valleys. It wasn't too physically difficult and the constantly changing, but always magnificent scenery, helped me to forget the miles. We spent the nights in the houses of local people, with several different families during our walk. The welcome was simple but generous.
