Can Tho is the largest city on the Mekong Delta, and a pleasant place for a stopover during your trip to Vietnam.

My suggestion:
Take the time for a boat trip on the city's canals!
My review
Can Tho is the largest city on the Mekong Delta and is located at the point where the river empties into the South China Sea. I liked the city - I enjoyed its restful atmosphere despite the fact that there is so much going on. In fact, Can Tho is the largest economic hub south of Ho Chi Minh City and a major transport epicentre. There is also a renowned university that attracts a lot of French students.
I recommend that you spend a few hours on a boat, floating along the canals that criss-cross the city, including the floating market, and treating yourself to local produce and fresh fruit.
Can Tho is also the ideal departure point to explore the Mekong Delta. I spent a day and a half in the city, then spent a few days taking a trip into the aquatic world of the Mekong Delta.

170 km from Ho Chi Minh, Can Tho is in the heart of the Mekong delta. It's a prosperous town that is developing quickly but it's a pleasant place to stay.

My suggestion:
Just like every town on the banks of the Mekong, I recommend you spend a day floating on the river and wandering the markets. The one at Can Tho is the most beautiful of the delta.
My review

During my visit to the Mekong delta during my trip to Vietnam, I made sure to stop at Can Tho. The first day, I simply watched the river go by and went to the wonderful market of Cai Khê. It is clean and I found a kaleidoscope of the country's fruit and vegetables. At the meat and fish stalls it get a bit more complicated. Besides the usual stalls selling poultry, beef, and pork, there is also a large choice of turtles, wormy looking frogs, slimy eels, snakes, and even the poisonous pufferfish. Its an ugly, puffed up fish which has a very strong poison in its bile. It requires real skill to cook it so that it's edible.

The next day I went for a classic trip on the Mekong. 6 hours following the water, looking at authentic floating markets and wandering down remote canals. You shouldn't miss it for any reason, and the trip is best if you go from Can Tho.
