Nakhon Si Thammarat is a big town in the south of Thailand, generally overlooked by tourists, or the foreign ones anyway!

My suggestion:
Go there! Very few people are interested in the city, and even if the city itself isn't a treasure trove, the region is full of surprises.
My review

I know Nakhon Si Thammarat very well because it's my wife's home town and I go there regularly to visit my in-laws. After Bangkok, Nakhon Si Thammarat is like my second home in Thailand.

Nakhon Si Thammarat temple is probably what the town is best known for, especially by the Thai tourists who come here. Actually, Wat Phra Mahathat Woromaha Vihan is the most sacred in the whole of south Thailand.

Other than that, you couldn't really say that Nakhon Si Thammarat appears on the radar when foreign tourists are planning their trip to Thailand. OK, it's true that its not particularly charming, most of the buildings are a bit so so, with the occasional wooden house that is older and more typical. The town used to be surrounded by walls, of which there are still some vestiges near where I stay.

During my last stay, opposite the temple, we found a newly renovated square with a nice cafe and a teak house that you can visit freely. We often eat in a restaurant that has traditional puppet shows in the evening. There's probably more that could be said about the town, I know there are still other places to discover, like this artists' house hidden in the little streets.
