Going on a trip to Thailand is also about stopping in towns such as Nakhon Ratchasima, AKA Khorat and wandering around whilst waiting for the next bus. It was by luck that I stumbled upon its historic centre, city wall and several old, wooden houses. As I wasn't in a hurry (I rarely am!) I carried on by tuk-tuk to the Prasat Phanom Wan Temple. At only 20km from the town centre, it's a temple dedicated to Shiva that was built between the 9th and 11th Centuries. Pretty cool.
Being too early for a bowl of fried noodles or the night market, I decided to say "hi" to the national heroine, Thao Suranari, who's famous for having defended the town against a Laotian invasion from Vientiane in 1827. As the wife of the deputy Governor, she got the soldiers who arrived at the city gates drunk as skunks, at which point the city's soldiers massacred the lot!
