The island of PhiPhiLey is only accessible by boat, whether as part of a private tour or on a public one.The first time I set foot on 'The Beach', no one else was there. That's unusual today, as it's become a hotspot for travellers on vacation inPhiPhiwho are looking for their dream destination.
Maya Bay (the name of the main beach) is as stunning as it looks in the movie. It's a creek surrounded by jagged rocks, with turquoise water and nothing else.No restaurants, hotels etc.Just motor boats going to and fro, laden with tourists. If you want to be undisturbed you'll need to get up early and hire a private boat to get there.
There are two ways to approach Phi Phi Ley. You can arrive at the bay to the front, which is the usual way, where you get straight off the boat on to the beach, or you can arrive by the rear, which I decided to do the last time I went.In this case, you'll find yourself surrounded by rocks, amazing colored sea and you'll also need to swim up to a simple ladder to reach the back of the beach, which is visible a few meters away.
It was at the Phi Phi Islands where I came to realize that the photos of Thailand you see in magazines, on TV or on the web are not photoshopped. The water truly is turquoise; the colors truly sparkling! For once, the dream we've been sold is genuine!
No cars on the Phi Phi islands! The only island that's inhabited is Don.
Lee is quite famous for its diving sites, especially Maya Bay. I admit it: Maya Bay is beyond wonderful. I can't comment on the diving as I don't know how to swim and therefore did not explore the seabed; but many people told me about their wonderful underwater experiences.
On Ko Phi Phi Don there are dozens of little agencies specializing in diving, and these will be happy to take you to Ko Phi Phi Lee. Negotiate the price however, as competition is fierce!
