Far from the majority of tourist routes, Phayao is a small town located on the banks of the homonym lake.
My suggestion:
You'll be amazed by the peacefulness of this town and don't hesitate to walk along its pleasant streets.
My review
I always thought that I was lucky to come across Phayao by chance In this town, I found exactly what I was looking for: lots of peace but with numerous entertainment options.
From the banks of the lake, the sunsets are impressive, especially if you observe them from one of the main roads, such as Chai Kwan road, and whilst savouring a fresh Chang beer (a typical Thai beer). In addition, the town has important historical heritage and there are many temples, as well as small gardens and parks with incredibly sculpted details. To conclude, a nice place where you can recover after long days of your trip to Thailand.
If you have time, you should visit the Wat Analayo temple. It's quite something with impressive stone sculptures.
