The most visited areas in Thailand are always the centre and the south. Mae Malai, located further north, shows the true character of Thailand, without the saturation of mass tourism. The local market is a treat in all senses, you will see, feel, and, if you wish, even see the spices and try typical food (be careful of the spice!).
As for Mae Malai's main attraction, the elephant training camp, I couldn't be more against it. There are other places in Thailand where these magnificent animals are treated with respect and are looked after carefully, in Kananchanburi for example.
I would like to emphasise that the backs of the these creatures isn't designed to withstand the weight of two people as well as seats, so when you travel on an elephant's back you cause them irreparable damage. I strongly advise against going to this place.
