The name of the city means "the place where sohihies grow", the sohihy being a tree that used to be very common in the region and was used mainly in boat construction. Unfortunately, today there are only a few specimens left, deforestation has taken its toll on the majority of them.
The special reserve of Bora is situated 35 km from Antsohihy. It is home to many native species of birds, including the very beautiful red fody and some species of aquatic turtles and other reptiles. The reserve is also the territory of 6 species of diurnal and nocturnal lemurs.
