Diego Suarez was renamed Antsiranana at independence. It is the third harbour of the island and the biggest city in northern Madagascar . Antomboko, meaning with holes, pierced, is its original name. A name that is suggestive of Diego Bay which, with its length of 97 miles, is one of the largest in the world .

My review

Land of the Antakarana ethnic group – those from the cliffs –, Diego Suarez is also a happy mix of various origins: Comorians, Chinese, Indians and Europeans cohabit there. Antsiranana, which was once a pirates' hide-out, is now a water sports paradise. The Emerald Sea, its beaches of fine sand and its bays all offer sublime panoramic views on the coral reef. The wilderness of Dune Bay, Pigeon Bay, or Sakalava Bay is passable on foot or by mountain bike.

In the town's surrounding area, you can either admire the Tsaratanana massif culminating at 9426 ft., or climb up to the Montagne des Français to find an hour-long rock climbing trail that will give you a good view of baobabs and aloes as you climb…
