This town of 70,000 inhabitants is the capital of Menabe region, whose name means red earth. Menabe is the home of the baobab, the island's emblem and something you absolutely must see during your trip to Madagascar.

My review

Poised on the Morondava delta, next to the Mozambique Channel, the town built on the dunes suffers from erosion problems. In 150 years it has lost 2 km of plains. But that doesn't stop it from being an important port on the west coast.

South of the town, don't miss the pretty peninsula of Nosy Kely, on one side of which is mangrove and on the other the Mozambique Channel. At sunrise, there is the fairy tale ballet of hundreds of outrigger pirogues, coasters and schooners. These last are supposed to be the most beautiful on the west coast thanks to the ancestral skills of the ship builders.

About 20 kilometres away is the unmissable Avenue of the Baobabs. A dozen trees more than 30 metres high will impress you with their majestic power.
