As well as fishing, the inhabitants of the region make a living growing corn, sweet potatoes and producing salt: Menaky canal leads to the salt marshes.
Belo sur Mer is also one of the most renowned small-scale, traditional shipyards that you are likely to see in the course of your trip to Madagascar . The know-how of the shipwrights is handed down from generation to generation and it is said that the dhows and schooners made here are the finest of the west coast.
Not far from Belo sur Mer, where west meets south, is Kirindy Mitea National Park. It offers beaches, interior lakes, islands, flamingos, lemurs, as well as pine and baobab forests in profusion.
