Morombe is therefore a bustling market harbour. It is renowned for its Cape pea harvest. In addition to sea products, Morombe sustains itself through the cultivation of cassava, corn and rice. Morombe is the capital of the Vezo , a semi-nomadic fishing people. Dotted along the coast are their villages consisting of fragile tent houses made from torn canoe sails.
About 37 miles away is a sea water lake, lake Ihotry. Its surface area varies between 37 and 43 square miles with the season. It is a real paradise for ornithologists and those keen on nature trips . Here, you can admire migrant birds from the northern hemisphere, aquatic birds and a few species from the forest. Pink flamingos by the hundreds, Ibises, cormorants and many more are all part of it!
